A new bill introduced this week by state House Rep. Mike McCready, R-Bloomfield Hills, would allow fines of up to $100 for beggars and panhandlers who are “too aggressive.”
What do you think, Michigan?

Best. Columnist. Ever.
Come Heller High Water I is the collection readers asked for, and includes columns that they wanted reprints of.
In true Heller style, topics cover everything from the craziness of having kids to tales from his U.P. days.
Come Heller High Water II is the smash hit follow-up to Come Heller High Water I. It includes everything from Andy's takes on modern life to conversations with his back home pal Moon Dimple, and much, much more.
Saving the World One Column at a Time is a bitingly funny look at the world through the eyes of this award-winning columnist. In it he takes on corporate crooks, Little League parents, tongue piercers, ketchup sinners and much, much more. A must-have for Heller fans.
Sally says
Why fine them? If they are begging in the first place, they won’t have the funds to pay!
Bill VanDriessche says
File this proposal under the “let’s create a problem and make a law against it” category. Then they wonder why their constituents think they’re not doing anything in Lansing
Vera Hogan says
If they’re begging or panhandling, where are they going to get $100 for a fine. We only see them occasionally and they are usually not aggressive, just the opposite in fact. We were in Hollywood, California once and saw one that was pretty funny. Guy was carrying a sign that said, “$1.00 for sh**y advice” — and people were waiting in line. Lawmakers should find something better to do.
Sue says
I saw one in Florida ” let’s be honest..I want a beer”

One word: DUMB

I thought Republicans want less government? It seems to me they are the ones that always come up with these lame brain bills.
Tony M says
I thought Republicans were for less government? But they always are the ones that come up with these lame brain bills that are basically on unenforceable.
Andrew Heller says
Exactly. And yet no one calls them on it. It’s astonishing.
Jeanette says
Our tax dollars at work. Then they wonder why people are irritated with government!
A Yuper's Mum-in-law says
NO,! Concentrate on getting jobs back, get rid of the unfair trade agreements, then no one will have to panhandle. If they’re a problem in Bloomfield Hills, local Ordance would be a better solution. Most of his constituents can afford a couple $ now and then, of course it would not be a tax write off.
JimS says
What an idiot I am sure the guy has a hundred to pay the fine
NativeOfMichigan says
Hey Michigan, hold your nose,
It’s just government as usual,
Now we reap the (overripe) fruits of,
The Great Odoriferous Party!
Eileen says
Let’s create a bill to fine the lawmakers for coming up with lame brained bills. Must have been a slow day in the legislature.
Elaine Folger says
Another example of our legislature acting foolish. This explains why nothing ever gets done – they are too busy harassing people.
Tom says
The only aggressive panhandler I have met was on Fort Street in Detroit, maybe about the corner of Washington Blvd. He kept asking me for money, “In Jesus’ name! In Jesus name!” I gave him a buck.
I met some aggressive shoe-shiners in Kusadashi, Turkey. I ended up letting them “shine” my canvas tennis shoes. They let me pay them in Greek money.
Jean says
I wish they’d fine those robo callers that pestering me 10-15 times a days. We don’t even bother to answer the phone anymore!
Sue Z says
Unbelievable! With all the really big problems that need to be dealt with, MI legislators come up with this. I hear they are going to legislate who can use bathrooms, too. What about poisoned drinking water or deteriorating schools or infrastructure or poverty??? I want to scream, but instead my heart sinks.
