It’s the eternal summer debate in Michigan: Which is the best lake to vacation on, dream by, sail upon, swim within, build sand castles next to.
I grew up on Lake Michigan, so for me it’s no contest.
But what say you? (You watch – this’ll come down to a contest between the Big Two – Huron or Michigan, sunrise and sunset.)

Perhaps I should recluse myself, inasmuch as I have a cottage on Lake Huron! Have to say , however ,
absolutely most gorgeous sunsets ever–! Gives Hawaiia a run for their money when the sun is going down! Everyone has a different opinion based on their life experiences . Spent many summers on Lake Michigan as well, and also beautiful
I grew up in a suburb of Chicago, very close to Lake Michigan. As a young adult, I loved walking around the peninsula at Northwestern University in Evanston and just hanging around on the rocks there, reading and staring out at the lake. When we were kids, our parents took us to the Indiana sand dunes on Lake Michigan. Despite it being freezing cold, we loved getting into the lake with our dad, who would throw us up in the air and catch us. Jumping the big waves repeatedly was also AMAZING!
Okay, by rights I should have voted for Lake Michigan, since that’s the one I grew up on and I love it still. However, my family is from the Thumb, so I have many fond memories of Lake Huron, and man, is it WARMER! Fantastic sunsets at both (we were on Wildfowl Bay, so faced west) so that doesn’t factor in.
BUT…..I have seen so many incredible pictures of the Lake Superior shoreline and have been awed by the ferocity of the Superior storms all my life–so I went yooper with my vote.
Beautiful picture! As someone who was born in New Jersey and grew up at the Jersey shore, I loved walking the beaches along the ocean and the fun and games on the boardwalks…what can I say, I was young then. I never liked swimming in salt water, and I have to say I much prefer all of the Great Lakes surrounding Michigan but especially Lake Michigan, which is only 30 minutes away. They’re all wonderful for different reasons. I’ve lived in Michigan for almost 40 years now, and I love this beautiful state!
Lake Michigan…but aren’t we blessed to live surrounded on 3 sides by such beautiful places
We literally have the PERFECT state motto “If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look around you.”
I’d say we’re surrounded on 4 sides but only three at a time
Without a doubt, no matter the problems we are facing, this state is the greatest in this category. I grew up in Marquette along Lake Superior and ya the water was cold most of the time, hey part of the excitement, but were else could you watch the sun rise up out of the lake in the morning and in the same spot watch it sink into the western sky and the lake. And the northern lights, if you have not laid out on a dark beach in the U.P. to watch well you are missing a show. Alaska has nothing on us in dept, I have seen them both. We have fantastic light shows but you need to get out of town to really appreciate them. I will not be pro lake, I am pro MICHIGAN LAKES and glad we have them.
Have to go with Huron. Grew up going to Tawas area and now own lake property near Oscoda. Warmer, sandier beaches, spectacular sunrises.
I voted Lake Michigan but Lake Superior would be my second choice. I just never get a chance to get there.
I voted Huron/Michigan since they’re really one lake. Difficult choice because I love Superior too. I don’t like to knock Erie or Ontario either but since Huron begins an hour west of me and Saginaw Bay is little over an hour north I’ve never driven south to visit the Great Lakes. I have take advantage of opportunities to visit the more southern portions of the lakes when fate takes me that direction.
I should amend my choice to say it’s the lake I’m on or headed to next.
For me it would have to be Lake Michigan . Growing up in Flushing[ live in Leelanau Co ] seemed like we always went over to Lake Huron . But I think over the years Ive had a draw more towards Lake Michigan the colors of the water you don’t see any where else . Also you have to consider the way of life up here around Lake Michigan is hard to beat .
