The Heller Poll: Was Trump’s treatment of the Gold Star family finally an insult too far for voters?

August 2, 2016 by Andrew Heller 34 Comments

27612581972_d09557c515_oNothing to date has been (to use an archaic war movie reference) “an insult too far” (if you know the movie you don’t win a prize but you do win my respect) for Trump supporters. But was his treatment of a Gold Star family whose Muslim son, an Army captain who was killed in the line of duty in Iraq, finally too much for those voters who are supposedly still on the fence?

You tell me.

The only thing more disgusting than Trump are his blind mice followers. They sure have a lot of people to hate. It must be exhausting.

Unfortunately, nothing is too far for his voters. There’s no line to cross. He has said so many hateful things about so many individuals, groups, and cultures already. Those who have supported him thus far aren’t going anywhere.

For me, it’s too much, he’s gone too far. But I realized that pretty early on . (referencing the handicapped reporter he mimicked), But, having said that, I am amazed at many of the comments I’m seeing on fb this morning, still supporting him . As someone said “America, you’re better than that.” Shame on us…

Many people do not know what, “a Gold Star Family,” is. We all should start writing and saying, “the parents of an American army Captain who was killed in Iraq.”

And, it was a BRIDGE too far, about a World War 2 battle.

No one who is going to vote for the Rump will care what he says. His supporters are not the listening type. For the Rump supporters, I do not believe there is any “insult too far”

No, because he insulted a Muslim family which does not bother his followers. Actually when one of his supporters (holding a Trump) sign sort of brought this up at a rally, she was booed. Probably because she was a woman as well. Nothing is too much for Trump voters. They don’t care if he sells the country out to Putin.

Right on! to all the comments above! Trump went way too far right from the beginning. His words and actions are ignorant and unbelieveable.
If Hilary is not the right choice either, (Hah!) please vote anyway——Not for the lesser of two evils but:
Gary Johnson is the Libertarian Candidate, and Jill Stein is the Green Party Candidate. A vote for Gary or Jill is a vote that Trump or Hilary WON’T get.
Using your privilege to vote is your ticket to stating your opinions for the next 4 years.

If you vote for a third party candidate out of some misguided fit of pique you may well ensure Trump will get in office. People keep talking like Hillary and Trump are equally bad for the country. She is a qualified, rational human being you might not agree with. He is a frightening, ill-informed, narcissistic bully who can’t even control himself on Twitter. How can you not see this? And if you bothered to really look at the backgrounds of the people running for The Libertarian and Green parties you’d know these were poor choices, too. When are Americans going to grow up and vote for a candidate that they think actually won’t harm their fellow citizens? To use your vote as a way to show your opinion, regardless of the national consequences, is selfish and downright childish.

I just have to believe America won’t let Trump get anywhere near the White House. Don’t panic, Keith. Just speak up loud and proud on the side of reason and civic responsibility at every single opportunity you get between now and November. I plan on it, and hope you do, too.

The vid that I saw was shocking. Pence was at a rally and a Trump supporter asked him about his take on the comments. Before she had finished her question, the house booed her, and Pence had to quiet them to let her finish. After affirming that Capt. Khan was a hero, most of the audience did not applaud. That is the raw evil ugliness of the Trump constituency. And maybe we’re living on a street with several we’d otherwise consider neighbors.

The man is a sociopath and in no way should even be considered a serious contender. Trump is bombastic, crude, uncouth, and an extremely selfish and highly spoiled brat. All of that at the age of 70. He’s never had to grow up.

Some comments from TV new coverage in Davenport Iowa last week. Several folks waiting for rally to begin. “Oh it’s just Donald being Donald” My mom used to say that to us kids when an obnoxious uncle showed up for Thanksgiving.

I’d hope the average folks would pay close attention to his demeaning put downs of the fire personnel who were following capacity guidelines( for the safety of all present) Trump said there was lots of room, they didn’t know what the hell they were doing, this was in Colorado Springs last week. Google it.
One journalist said ” with all the wild fires they’ve fought, you don’t insult Colorado firefighters” That’s what he thinks of us little guys

Quoting Tony Schwartz, Trump’s ghost writer on “Art of the Deal”, who practically lived with Trump for 18 months while writing the book and knows him well, recently said Trump is a sociopath who has no soul and is a black hole. That’s so obvious to sane-thinking people, yet his followers think he can do no wrong; so no, I don’t think it will sway most of them.

What concerns me is that yesterday he started telling his followers that if he loses it will be because the Democrats will rig the election. He’s stirring up even more hate and anger in some of his more ardent followers. After hearing that I went to a right-wing website (Breitbart…yikes!) to see what people were saying, and there were so many heated, hateful comments, such as, “if Trump loses there will be a civil war, and we’ll win because we have all the guns and the stupid Democrats don’t”–crazy, stupid stuff like that.

I know not all of his followers are crazy or hateful, but I worry that there are some seriously unhinged people following Trump. I know they can’t start a civil war but they think they can, and a few seriously angry people could do some serious damage.

In the military you have what is called the thousand yard stare.
Why is it called the thousand yard stare? It is somewhat simple.
At a thousand yards or so the enemy that is moving in on your position is usually not so secretive in their movements. The closer they get to your position, the more they try to hide their movements. Most battles at fought with the two sides about 200 yards or less separating them.
Why am I bringing this up?
When I look at any politician or political wannabe, I try to look farther into their background.
The up close stuff is usually hidden real well. The farther out you go the less hidden it may be.
Kahn has deep ties to the Clinton foundation and other activities that the Hilliary is involved in.
Kahn as a lawyer has studied the Constitution very much, but not for the same reason most Americans would.
Kahn believes that the Constitution should be replaced by sharia law.
He is a firm believer in sharia law. If he was to get his way there would be no freedom of speech or freedom of religion.
There would only be one religion and that would be islam.
Under islam, women are treated less than camels or other animals.
Women in too many islamic countries cannot speak or walk around in public unless she has a male relative escorting her to where ever she needed to go.
If caught walking around in public she can be punished severly.
Gays would not have any rights at all. NO marriage. If found out by the local authorities they would more than likely be murdered, by said authorities.
How? In some cases thrown off the roof of a tall building, burned alive or beheaded. Depending how the local iman wanted them punished.
If a woman is raped, she stands a fairly good chance of being beaten or beheaded.
Too many liberals, like Andrew, cannot see more than 3 or 4 inches in front of their noses.
Oh, Pat Smith, the mother of one of the soldiers that died in Bengahzi also spoke about the grief over her sons’ death. She only got about 10 minutes of air time by the networks.
Kahn’s mother got more than 10 times the amount of coverage that Pat Smith did. Of course, Kahn’s mother was speaking for the democrats. Pat Smith is for the republicans

You are as mentally ill as Trump. Where do you people get this garbage? This has been floating around the Right lunatic fringe all day. Mr. Kahn got more attention because his story wasn’t based on sad delusions. He isn’t pushing Sharia Law or Hillary. And if you want people to take any of this junk as real, maybe you shouldn’t just cut and paste it from some other website.

And, hey, try going to some legitimate site to get your news (and, no, Fox News and the tabloids are not legitimate). Maybe then you wouldn’t just come up with the usual anti-Muslim slurs that are boring, repetitive, and just plain wrong.

Just a comment on Pat Smith. The networks nbc, cbs, abc started programming at 10 pm If RNC wanted impact they shouldn’t have put her on at 8:20pm.
Also…Fox went to commercial and came back as she spoke and broke away to take a phone call from Trump. So much for Fox indignation.
We watched CNN…every speaker, no cut off, minimal chatter from the broadcasters.

And! You are completely wrong about the origin of the expression, “thousand-yard stare.” It is a description of the blank eyes of soldiers who have been in combat too long.

Tom, Did you ever serve in the military?
I had served with men who served in combat in the Korean war and the Vietnam war.
The combat hardened vets used the term in both ways.
A couple of them were part of what it called “The frozen Chosen” a battle where it was winter and the Americans and South Koreans
        were in retreat.
My older brother (now deceased) fought in Vietnam, along with some other cousins (some direct combat, some not so direct), who, along with others used the thousand yard stare in both meanings.
From the tone of your sarcastic remarks, you are definitely a democrat.
You are what lenin called a “useful idiot”. When Lenin, (White Russians) Adolph Hitler, (brown shirts) got in power using those useful idiots they killed them off.
By the way, the brown shirts were a mixture of what we call the lgbt group now a days.
I have studied history. I am not a history major, but I do know how to read and write reports on what I have read.
Do I trust Donald Trump? No. Do I trust Hiliary Clinton? NO!

Trump said (a while ago) that he could go out on Fifth Avenue and shoot someone without losing voters, so why should this egregious insult be the last straw for his woefully, willfully uninformed voters (“Don’t confuse me with the facts.”)?

He added insult to injury by accepting a purse heart he did not earn (He felt he was in the military because he attended a military academy?). He got it “the easy way”? That is an insult to all veteran who shed blood for their country, as well as the Khans.

It really is time (before November) for people to learn about the problems in this country and choose the best solution, instead of focusing on who is the worst candidate or best protest vote. Check out “This is Your Government on Drugs” to get the recent history leading to this election.
There’s too much at stake and too many narrow-minded zealots on both sides not to.
