Auchtoons: Frugal when it suits them

February 19, 2018 by Andrew Heller 12 Comments

Toon & text by John Auchter

Last year, the Trump administration budget proposed eliminating the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, a federal program to clean the lakes and protect them against invasive species. It was fairly up front about it, spinning it as the fiscally responsible thing to do. “We must make cuts, can’t just keep growing the national deficit, think of our children and grandchildren, etc.” That used to be standard dogma for Republicans and a President who sold himself as an expert on debt, assuring us he would eliminate the federal deficit in eight years.

This year, the Trump Administration is proposing not total elimination of the GLRI, just a 90 percent reduction. What’s the other difference between this year and last? Oh, yeah: THE FEDERAL DEFICIT NO LONGER MATTERS!

Enormous tax cuts followed by a giant leap in spending is going to balloon the deficit, and this is suddenly OK with the very same people who just an administration ago preached this as our financial Armageddon.

You gotta laugh. Except it’s not really all that funny.

John Auchter draws cartoons. Lots and lots of them, each one better than the last. You can find them at  auchtoon.com. You can also find his stuff on Michigan Public Radio’s website under Opinion.

They don’t mind because we don’t matter.

It does not matter if it is the democrats or republicans that have control of the budget strings. They both go off the deep end when it comes to spending taxpayer money. No matter what level of government it is. City, township, county, state and federal.
Both parties waste a lot of money. It is like an disease. Is there a cure? Maybe, maybe not.
The most fiscal conservative after a while tries to stick to a budget. However after a few years he falls off the fiscal wagon and is infected by the idea that they need to overspend.
The democrats just spend worse that a drunken sailor. A drunken sailor stops spending when he runs out of money. Politicians from either party have no sense on when to stop spending.

Drunken sailor spending seems to be the mantra from the current occupant in the White House. First we do an unpopular tax cut that mainly benefits the rich and increases the federal budget, then we cut or try to cut programs that benefit the general public (not corporations) like this. This guy is an ignorant assclown

He also complained about Obamas vacations and him golfing. The assclown as you very well put it, has spent more of money on golf and going to Maralago in the first year than Obama did in eight. HE said he would be in the white working on weekends remember?

The assclown also wants to raise gas tax by 25 cents a gallon, that I believe is a tax shift. The assclown is making the working stiff pay for his tax cuts, after the rest of his tax shifts that will come you will be paying more than before.

They spent a trillion and a half with their tax cut. And, they still cut our Great Lakes! I sent Trump an email about this, months ago. The Great Lakes states helped him a great deal in his election: Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania et al. He hates us, nonetheless! A plague upon him! May Asian Carp eat his toes and fingers! Without anesthesia!

This internet thread is outrageously offensive to drunken sailors. You bigots need to rein in your prejudiced, discriminatory land-lubber rhetoric. Traditional Sailor Culture includes large amounts of Grog, and extreme generosity.

You must learn to appreciate other traditions, other cultures. Drunken sailors are Americans, too.

The phrase I used was to imply that drunken sailors have more sense than any of the
politicians in both political parties. I wonder if we took a bunch of drunken sailors
and put them in charge of the budget, maybe they might do a better job.
The may not do a worse job.
