Come Heller high water …
- It’s been more than three weeks since the Las Vegas slaughter. So is now the right time to have that talk we were all promised about gun control? Congress … hello? Mr. President … knock-knock, are you there?
Just as I thought. Once again we fell for the old “it’s not the right time” dodge. This is not a criticism of the gun lobby’s marionettes in Congress, by the way. They’re just doing what they’re told. This is a criticism of the majority of American citizens – roughly 60 percent by the latest polls – who want gun control. We’re the ones who whimper and back down when the NRA growls. So we’re to blame for the virus of mass murder in the U.S., right along with the right. Doesn’t feel so good, does it.
- This is one instance where I don’t feel the slightest guilt in saying, “I told you nothing would happen.” If little kids being slaughtered in their classroom doesn’t do it, why would anyone think a mere 600 adults being killed or wounded in Las Vegas would move us to action? Please. Even the so-called “bump stock” legislation is now stalled. It’s official: We don’t care one little … hey, the new Big Bang Theory is on!
- Ah, well. Onto other issues. A sarcastic friend wrote this: “I don’t know about you, but it’s a big relief for me to know that with Harvey Weinstein out of the picture, the problem of misogyny and sexism in Hollywood has finally been fixed once and for all.” Right on.
- Hey, Matt Damon, if you knew Weinstein was an “a-hole,” as you called him, why didn’t you say something years ago? You probably had a pretty good idea what kind of an a-hole he was. Apparently all of Hollywood knew. And yet you said nothing. Do women mean that little to you?
- OK, I’m clearly angry today. So be it. Sometimes the news is just infuriating. We sit and watch and twiddle our thumbs over problem after problem, then we woe-is-me afterward, as if that’s every accomplished anything. America has a “Well, SOMEBODY oughta do something about it” problem.
- I’m not surprised President Trump told the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson that “He knew what he signed up for, but it hurts anyway.” That’s exactly what I would expect out of him. What surprised me is he struggled to remember his name. It had to be on a paper right in front of him. So how could he mess that up? Stuff like that makes me suspect he’s not all there.
- Love new Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire’s response to reporters asking about whether he’s too old school to get with baseball’s new passion for analytics: “Dude, I’m only 59.” Being 56 myself, he is my new hero. Since when is 59 old? Or 66? Or 76? Our culture has a weird view of age. Elsewhere, people 40 up are revered for their experience and wisdom. In the dotcom age, I guess you’re over the hill and incapable of chewing peas by yourself after you pass 30.
- The new season of “Stranger Things” begins this weekend. There have been all sorts of articles saying “Here are 11 things to know before you watch.” I don’t read those for the same reason I don’t watch pregame shows. I don’t want to know what to look for. I want to just watch, OK? Leave me the heck alone. I don’t want to know anything that’s going to happen, and I don’t need your interpretation of it. I wonder if the people who write these articles also give their kids a note on Christmas Eve: “11 things to know about your gifts.” All of life is a preview these days. I urge you to resist.
- Amazing how fast the Jim Harbaugh bandwagon is emptying. They could rent that thing out for hayrides it’s so empty. Maybe the 1950s glasses don’t mean he’s an old school football genius after all.
- “Passivity may be the easy course, but it is hardly the honorable one.” – Noam Chomsky.

There is absolutely no gun law that would ever have prevented that evil bastard from committing mass murder. The truth about liberals like Andy and their desire for “gun control laws” (read confiscation from law abiding Americans) is that they love to stand on the dead bodies of victims while they howl to deny Constitutional rights to law abiding Americans. I can’t even begin to imagine the soulless, hate filled, dishonest, bile that regularly gets spouted by liberals today.
We’ll keep our guns Andy. You think about that long and hard. Have a great day and God bless America.
Nah. I don’t think I will.
See how easily you are triggered over the mere mention of gun control? Don’t worry, without your guns, you’d still be as pathetic as you are now.
I want to know more about the Las Vegas shooter. The liberal media sure is quiet about him lately. I am thinking his politics are absolutely left wing, anti Trump, ANTIFA, Democrat. I think he is yet ANOTHER violent, left winger that would hold the same signs at the same Democrat rallies as Andy.
Daddy-O: Do you realize what a far-out irrational kook you are on this topic? Do you realize your words and thoughts all are cliches and baloney taken from nasty sources, with nothing original, thoughtful, or helpful?
There. Now do you feel better? Good! We all need that now and then!
RE: Somebody ought to do something about it…I have been wondering that myself since last November. Trump is still the first-line story every time I hear the news. The networks love to point out the stuff he says and does, but they never have a “fix” for it, not even a suggestion for us or for every single guest that they interview.
RE Previews: Yes, America is now resorting to previews of everything. With all the smart phones, computers, media, we know everything so fast, that we need to know it faster! And it doesn’t even make us any smarter! People always ask ‘where did the time go?’ We used it all up previewing everything!
Great column today!
(My opening line was meant for Andy.)
And I appreciated it!
Al Avila finally did something right. I truly hope they clean house. Gardenhire needs to bring in his own people. Start from scratch. Only thing is it’s going to be a long three years for him. Bargain hunting Al is only going to sign other teams rejects.
He brought in his own people already — Pelfry, Zimmerman, etc.
I would offer my fellow law abiding citizens some advice that is far superior to Andy’s with respect to lowering violent crime rates in our country. Every adult should get trained, get armed and carry a firearm daily for personal protection. We could likely cut the national violent crime rates by 90% if most adults carried firearms for protection.
I carry a gun. My fellow citizens should also carry. Thank you very much. Have a great day.
Police carry guns and how many innocent people do they shoot? So the small fraction of police officers there are compared to the population of the United States, let’s give everyone a gun and see how that works out. I do believe police officers have far more training with a gun and how to use it compared to the average joe blow that wants everyone to carry one.
“Every adult”. I guess you mean even the mentally ill and convicted felon adults too. Something tells me you didn’t put a lot of thought into that comment. Not that I would expect you to.
If most adults carried firearms, I would never leave my house. If you think the cops ( who have regular on-going training and testing) have hot trigger fingers,
think of 10 people you know, right off the top of your head. How many of them do you really think should carry a gun?
Never leave your house again. I carry a handgun daily. I voted for President Donald Trump. I am out there along with millions more just like me.
You must now officially be a home bound, shut-in forever.
We should make it legal for everyone to get a grenade launcher, that way you don’t have to be so accurate. I can’t believe what I’m reading. Holy crap!!!!
so you admitting you are dangerous and intend to shoot people.
It’s been a rough few weeks, or even a year. I am finding the World Series a nice distraction. Verlander has a no/no in the bottom of the 4th. His 2nd inning bunt set the Astros up for the leading run. It might be the last time we get to really watch him play.
I’ll go for the rough year Fred. I am still trying to wake up from this nightmare that trump was elected president!
Ahhhhhh!…. You don’t talk about a No/No before the game is over. JV gave up 2 hits after you posted this.
Jinx!
🙂
As one writer penned a while ago on another site, “if the pen is mightier than the sword, then maybe we should register typewriters”. It was not the writer sitting at a desk that won the revolutionary war of independence. It was the men and women that were on the front lines doing the actual fighting that won that war. That war and every war after that we won it was the fighting men and women that did the job that they had to do.
Bump stocks are not needed. They actually cause a loss of firing accurately. I have fired a lot of automatic weapons over the years and anytime you go over a 3 round burst, the chances of shooter hitting a target go way down. .
I also have a lot of questions about the shooting in Las Vegas. Some things are not adding up. The “security guard” who was shot in the leg disappeared for a while. Then listening to the news tonight, the story being told is that he took a 700 mile journey to Mexico to visit family or friends.
I knew a soldier who was shot in the thigh during the invasion of Grenada. Bullet was a through and through in his thigh. He was hospitalized for about 10 days.
As to the poll that Andrew cited that Americans want more gun control. Who were the groups that were asked about gun control? What were the questions that were asked during the poll? I thought that Andrew opined that he did not trust polls a few months ago.
Just as important who was the group that financed the poll?
As for the phone call that President Trump made to the widow of Sgt La David, the congress critter that was in the car was a old friend of the family. She is also someone who hates President Trump.
I do think that whatever President Trump would have said would have been skewed to smear President Trump.
I will repeat something that I wrote awhile ago. President Trump was not my first choice to be President of the United States. But, given the choice between hilliary and Trump, I chose Trump.
Hiliary was and still continues to be her own worst enemy. A lot of us have watched her and slick wiley over the years and we did not like what we saw.
Andrew, do you know not what noam chomsky is really talking bout? If men and women who follow his teachings would gain power, you would be among those that they would put in a concentration camp. They cannot have men like you becoming upset at them and writing about their failed promises.
“CRITTER” ??????? That word killed your whole point for me.
Yes, congress critter. It is a term that is used to describe a member of congress that acts a little bit off base. It is a term that can be applied to either a member of the republican party or the democratic party. Funny thing is that democrats have no problem using terms like that to describe republicans, but they cannot stand anyone criticizing a member of the democratic party. No matter how corrupt the democrat party member is.
It is now beginning to look like the supposed collusion of the republicans having dealings with the Russians is starting to fall apart. It seems that members of the democratic party had more dealings with the Russians. Yes, the a couple republicans did some very low level meetings with the Russians. Those meetings pale in comparisons to the meetings that the democrats had with the Russians. There is too much about that investigation to fully comment on.
If Ronald Reagan can quote lyrics from a Springsteen anti-war song to prop up his Shining City on a Hill notion, Andy can use a Chomsky quote.
On that note, here’s another Chomsky quote to ponder:
“The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum….”
I almost chose that one.
What noam chomsky means in that quote is censorship. So long as a person speaks correctly to the whims of the moderator. Any opposing opinions will not be tolerated.
Andrew some of your comments that you have made in the past about a few things would be cause for noam chomsky to label you an enemy of the state. No, I cannot list them, they were written a few years ago.
If noam chomsky was to gain power he would eliminate the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The only god that he would allow would be the worship government as the god of the nation. If you own a house and some property it would not be yours, it would belong to the government and they would only allow you to live/reside in it until somebody else higher up in the food chain wanted it for their use.
My interpretation is that Chomsky is saying if those in power can provide the illusion that people are having a say by encouraging lively debate on a subject they’d rather the people’s focus be on, then it’s easier for them to stay in power.
Think now: the president would much rather encourage lively discussion on things like taking a knee or Hillary’s, well anything Hillary, than have such discussion on, say, Russian influence on the election.
Such tactics occur in all organized political parties, in business, all the way down to personal relationships.
Read Chomsky as you wish.
All I know is when Chico Marx’s character in Duck Soup “Who you gonna believe, me or your lying eyes”, he was saying out loud what Chomsky is saying those who seek to be and stay powerful are saying to themselves as they dangle their shiny keys.
