Auchtoons: We’ll miss reporters when they’re gone

February 10, 2018 by John Auchter 10 Comments

Toon & text by John Auchter

A single word to summarize these Larry Nassar trials? How about, “ugh”? Well, it may not be a real word, but it’s a real feeling. Still, as stomach-churning as this experience has been, there are some, if not positive, then at least hopeful takeaways.

First and most obvious is the lesson learned. Or should I say, the lesson again learned: Organizations must have accountability standards in place to protect the vulnerable (especially children). Whether a church, a university, or a gymnastics team — there must be standards and practices that prevent abuses, and if abuses happen, stop it quickly.

The second takeaway is not as obvious but just as important. The crimes were committed, but now at least justice is being served. It required brave young women to step forward and testify. It required dedicated law enforcement and a vigilant judiciary to complete the process. And it also required professional journalists to shine the light.

Without the hard work of reporters like Michigan Radio’s Kate Wells, these awful stories could very well have remained in the dark, hiding those responsible and leaving the victims without a voice, the public uninformed.

It is especially popular these days to talk about “the media” and “the press” as a monolithic failure. And yes, it’s fair to desire quality work — we should insist journalism be as honest and unbiased as possible. But don’t dismiss the institution. There is no question that professional reporters play a critical role in a free nation. We can’t shout “fake news” whenever something violates our ideology and continue to expect journalism to stay strong.

John Auchter draws cartoons. Lots and lots of them, each one better than the last. You can find them at  auchtoon.com. You can also find his stuff on Michigan Public Radio’s website under Opinion.

John Auchter – Please don’t try to equate the libtarded BS you spew with the research and dedication that went into the Nassar investigation. You are a completely partisan, hack for the Democrat party. Don’t try to quiet those of us that call you out on your BS by drawing a false equivalency with the Nassar investigation. You are trying to use child molesting to your advantage to silence critics of lying liberal hacks.

Working Dad, I think you need to get some professional help. Really, you need help.

Don’t mind Working Dad. He is still sore because the Nunes Memo turned out to be a big “NOTHING BURGER” and his 401k value has been plummeting. On top of that, his idol is defending wife beaters and portraying them as the victims. The humiliation and shame must be overwhelming.

Yeah. Just like hilliary defended slick wiley when he was accused of raping and otherwise sexually abusing women. Hilliary destroyed a 13 year old girl years ago when she turned a man in for raping her. hilliary got the man a not guilty plea by destroying the victim.
The Nunes memo is only a big nothing in democratic minds. The information that has been gleaned so far from the memo keeps pointing back to the dnc and hilliary payin steele for the “dossier”. It points to the fact that steele (who is a British citizen) hates President Trump.
President Trump tweeted this morning about the democratic party “memo”.
Tweeting words to the effect that “he was not going to release the democratic memo because so much would have to be redacted. There was way too much classified information that was contained in the memo.. In order to release it, there would have to be a lot of redacting done to the memo. If President Trump had done so the democrats would have screamed that President Trump was hiding something.” The complicit liberal media would be all over the memo. I think if the major media would spend 60 minutes out of a 30 minute news cast to speak about the memo.
daca actually stands for Democrats Against Citizens of America.

Keep on smoking that stuff Fred. (or whichever account you are using this time – hard to keep track) My 401k is awesome. Only a brain dead idiot would try to equate a few days DJIA average to long term economic performance.

Tell me Fred the genius… Name the mutual funds that make up my 401k investments. Since you claim to know the performance of my 401k, you must obviously know the comprising funds.

        Name them

You were awake at 1:37 in the morning, seething in anger and stressing about this so much you couldn’t sleep. That is all evidence I need to know that my comment really got under your skin, and it wouldn’t had if it wasn’t so close to the truth.

You are a pathetic, deranged little man. Only you can change that.

John Auchter – Since you are such a die hard advocate for journalism that exposes pedophiles, where are your articles documenting Democrat Bill Clinton’s trips aboard the “Lolita Express” luxury airliner and his trips to “Orgy Island” whereby he and his buddy Epstein had sex with underage girls as young as 12?

Or are Democrats allowed to rape underage girls in your mind?
