It was hard not to notice the stark contrast this week between events celebrating the late President George H.W. Bush’s life and the shameless actions of the Michigan (and Wisconsin) lame duck legislatures.
Bush Themes: Civility, democracy, respect for the office, doing what’s right, sacrifice, generosity, graciousness, honor, duty, trust the system, serve the people, country first.
Michigan Legislature Themes: Grab and cling to power, the end justifies the means, the people have spoken (but I know better), duplicity, greed, game the system, serve the special interests, political party first.
It’s as if a Dickensian story was being played out live in front of all of us, and the likes of Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof completely missed the point. Maybe a visit from the Ghost of Christmas Future would save them. Or maybe they’re the Jacob Marley’s who will wear the chains they are forging in life.
John Auchter draws cartoons. Lots and lots of them. You can find them at his incredibly popular website auchtoon.com. You can also find his stuff on Michigan Public Radio’s website under Opinion.

Despicable conduct, they are beyond reproach.
Dave Standridge says
Same happening here in Wisconsin. It’s an effort orchestrated no doubt by the Heritage Foundation, Koch Brothers and others of the same ilk. Because elections have consequences. Unless you lose…
Jims says
Could you imagine if the Democrats were doing this. Like one of the protesters in Lansing said, it’s like tenants being evicted from the rental property and trashing the place

George H.W. Bush represented what the Republican party used to be. It is just shameful what it has turned into with the despicable leader they have in the White House.

Amen to THAT!! We have THE worst President in history, with an individual so full of himself and touting lies.
Fred says
GOP tactics in Wisconsin, Michigan and North Carolina are all signs of desperation. They know they are losing. Times are changing, but they don’t want to change. So, they will resist it at all costs, even if it means illegal or unconstitutional actions must be taken.
I am not too concerned. Legal challenges will be filed and their kneecapping measures will be reversed. Some of them might even face legal consequences. The best part is; most probably won’t be reelected.
Matthew says
Are some of you guys old enough actually to remember GHW Bush’s presidency? He really was as decent as all the talk at his funerals. He and President Carter and President Ford were upstanding American men.
We are cynical now, after Ollie North, Monica Lewinsky, Dick Cheney, Stormy Daniels et al. But, we used to expect character in our presidents.
Abner Devereaux says
So now the following counts as “tyranny” according to Democrats?
1. Bill passes state house
2. Bill passes state senate
3. Governor signs bill into law
I’ll never understand the mentality of Democrats.
Jims says
Unconstitutional bill passes state house.
Unconstitutional bill passes state senate.
Governor signs unconstitutional bill.
I’ll never understand why republicans are sore loosers.
Like your wonderful president trump says Hillary lost we won.
The Democrats won you lost. Get over it. Right?
MenaJoy says
Trust me, the mentality of Republicans has been called into view the last 2years!!!
Definitely not the caliber of George HW Bush!!
